Canine Skin Problems

Canine Skin Issues can be a problem for most  dogs. I have never had to resort to medicine to cure them. Below is a  Easy Home Remedy For Most Canine Skin Problems.

Cause’s of Canine Skin Problems

Cause’s of Canine Skin problems can be caused by anything from fleas, swimming in dirty ponds, Dry air during the winter months can also be a factor. Food allergies, all of which can cause skin issues. Sometimes yeast is the culprit, caused by many factors. listed below.Once they start Chewing it is hard to get them to stop, it becomes a habit, that is not easily broken. This recipe will help break that cycle.

Canine Skin Problems Help has Arrived

Below has been a tried and true method that i have used for many years,
and in my experience works.

Using home based remedies rather then antibiotics or worse, is always a good choice.
Not only for the monetary value but the results that medicine can have on any living creature.

What to do to Cure Canine Skin Problems

Of course it is very important to keep the skin clean.
Disinfect the area on a regular basis to avoid problems later.
I suggest a medicated shampoo or oatmeal shampoo always works well..

When bathing is not enough

For skin infections, hotspots, cuts and scrapes and any skin irritation that could become a problem later, we do want to cleanse the skin with a gentle solution.
This solution takes care of care of staph infection,, yeast, and most common bacteria, and it is safe for the dog, if they should lick once applied..

It is, povidone-iodine ,it can be purchased from any Pharmacy, and is easily used.

Povidone-Iodine

Povidone-Iodine Works Great

To dilute the povidone-iodine until it’s the color of iced-tea.

  • Pour a small amount in a bowl or whatever is available, dilute with warm water.
  • Soak a clean washcloth in the solution and wipe the infected areas gently to get the solution onto the skin.
  • Pat dry, Repeat this process twice a day for a week or more until the problem resolves.

This has prevented any need I have had to give antibiotics and has resolved most any canine skin problems, without having to resort to antibiotics or veterinarian visits

Fleas and Ticks Natural Treatments

Homemade Repellents for Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and TicksSince it is the season for Fleas and Ticks.  I thought we would talk again about homemade Fleas and Ticks solutions.

Oh my goodness, this time of year we all will battle this problem. And we certainly want to do the very best for our furry friends.

Too many people want to take the easy way and buy products from our veternarians. Please try to avoid doing this,at all costs. The spot on products especially. Lets use some common sense, if it advises you to put on gloves to apply this stuff, do you honestly want it on your pets skin?

Lets look into some alternatives to treat for fleas and ticks,  that actually do work and your veternarian or the drug companies dont have their hands in.

Lemon Recipe, Effective Repellent for Fleas and Ticks

***The Very best results I have gotten is with using the Lemon solution for fleas and ticks. sometimes I use a combo of Homemade things for fleas and ticks. If they are all natural it is safe.

  • Flea and Tick Recipe: Cut 1/4 Lemon (I wrap the lemon in cheese cloth to avoid messy straining) **Boil 2cups of water.** Put the Lemon in boiling water, turn off stove. **CoverLet Steep overnite. ** In the morning, Squeeze lemon.  **Pour with funnel into a Spray bottle. Waalaa Instant Flea and Tick repellent.  **Spray your Pet.  Avoiding Eyes, and sensitive areas. Spray behind ears, down back, under arms, chest, base of tail where fleas like to hide. You may use this treatment as often as you like, I would recommend daily.

****Homemade Repellents for Fleas and Ticks

1st) Bathe your dog, add  apple cider vinegar(organic) to the rinse water. This will make your dog’s fur taste bad, thus reducing any attraction it may have for fleas and ticks.

2nd)Dab two drops of essential oil to the area between your dog’s shoulder blades. Such as Lavender, or lemongrass essential oils repel ticks Lavender essential oil is also effective in reducing, fleas and ticks as well as flies and mosquitoes.

3rd) Boost your dog’s immune system by feeding a high quality pet food, such as Life’s Abundance which is high  in probiotics.

Fleas and Ticks in your Home

***Build a flea trap. However, building flea traps won’t rid your house of fleas, it’s a good way to verify that you’ve got fleas in your home and determine how severe an infestation there is.

Directions to build a flea trap> Hang a light source over a sticky, disposable surface (flypaper works well for this) or a bowl of soapy water. The heat from the light source attracts any nearby fleas, many of which will then get caught on the sticky surface or in the water. You will notice the fleas are small, dark, flat-bodied insects.******

Another Home Treatments for Fleas and Ticks.

One of the best ways I have found is to get some normal table salt. Sprinkle on carpets, sofas, cushions, let stand for 24hrs then vacume.I find is easier to do one or two rooms at a time. also, washing pet bedding in warm to hot water, and treating pet with the lemon spray during this time as well.

Diatomceous Earth as a Flea and Tick repellent

***There are Many Uses for Diatomceous Earth.  You may Treat your pets, your yard and your house with Diatomaceous Earth. However please read info here regarding proper use and warnings > all Diatomaceous Earth Products are not the same!

FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH BENEFITS SUMMARY:

What Is Diatomaceous Earth?: Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a powder comprised of microskeletons of deceased diatoms, which are a type of algae (both fresh water and sea water varieties occur). You sprinkle the powder on your pets and your carpets, and the fleas die from dehydration. You can use it on dogs, puppies, kittens, and cats.

How it works:
When applied to the animal’s fur, DE scrubs on the hard exoskeletons of fleas. The tiny granules of silicon (think finely ground sand) work in the tiny holes of the flea’s respiratory system and in the joints of the fleas. Every time the flea moves or breathes, the silicon grinds away at the exoskeleton, eventually killing the flea through blocking/maiming the respiratory holes or by water loss, as the exoskeleton helps keep in the flea’s body water. It works the same way when applied to carpets instead of fur.
How to use it:
1) Wear a mask and put one on your pet. Even though it’s nontoxic, you don’t want to get it in your lungs.

2) Sprinkle the DE along your dry pet’s spine. Massage it along the body, working your way carefully to the extremities, avoiding the eyes.

3) Spread some diatomaceous earth on the carpets, brush it in and leave for about four days. Then vacuum it up to remove most of the fleas in the carpet.

4) Repeat the application frequently during an infestation. You should notice a decrease in fleas within a couple days.

To order: Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth 10 lb. by Thomas Laboratories

NOTE: Make sure not to use the kind of DE used in swimming pools. Use natural diatomaceous earth. that is Human grade only, some health food stores, and from natural-pet catalogs.

Please Note: The effects of these spot on treatments to our pets has been a recent issue. God willing it will be taken off the market. But dealing with the big drug companies, honestly that is not likley going to happen. It is up to us to protect our pets. Recently I heard that one of the major companies that makes spot on flea control, is now offering a free rabies vaccine with purchase, (they make those too, what???), First off  a dog should only have a 1yr vaccine if under one year old, and a 3yr vaccine, 1year after the first vaccine is given. This is all that is legally required. See Article Vaccines Less is More. Whatever you do dont fall into this trap.

In Closing, We all want to do everything humanly possible to care for our pets. Especially with Controlling Fleas and Ticks, I hope this Article with Homemade Fleas and Ticks solutions has helped you in some way.

Fleas and Ticks is a on going fight, I am here to help.

Home Made Treatments For Ear Mites

Home Made  Treatments For Ear Mites

Ear Mites

Ear Mites

What are Ear Mites?

A Common problem is Ear mites.

  • What are they? Ear mites are microscopic parasites that live in the ear canals of dogs and cats.
  • Signs include dark discharge (“coffee ground-like”) within the ear.
  • Scratching the ears.
  • Redness or blood within the ear  and Head shaking.

Homemade treatments for ear mites that work well.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar: How to use Apple Cider vinegar for treating ear mites. This is said to work because of the acidity. Using a small amount of diluted apple cider vinegar as suggested.
  • Combine one part vinegar and two parts of water together.
  • Soak a cotton ball/paper towel with the mixture gently wipe the inside of the ears, making sure you get the mixture in the ear canal, not to deep, to avoid injury to your pet, massage the solution. Some recipes want you to flush ears with this solution, I prefer to do it this way.   If its much better to do a Ear Flush With this ear cleaner which is located on this page, that I use and recommend. Flush Ears for 3days with Ear cleaner wipe with soaked
  • Mineral Oil:You may temporarily combat ear mites by soaking a cotton ball with mineral oil and swabbing the inside of your pet’s ears.

  • Almond and Vitamin E Oil: Mix ½ ounce of almond oil and 400 IU of vitamin E to create a home remedy for ear mites.Use a dropper bottle to administer one dropper full of remedy into each ear. (Again I prefer to soak a cotton ball or paper towel to administer)Massage after each ear once applied.Use a paper towel or napkin to clean the outer portion of the ear opening and make sure not to clean too deeply in the ear canal. Apply the solution one time per day for three days.Allow the ears to rest for three days and then repeat the process once more.

Ear Mites Remedies Continued

  • Corn Oil: Using a few drops of corn oil (such as Wesson) makes a decent home remedy for cat ear mites. Although a bit messy. First, massage the oil about the inside of the ear, using a cotton ball to clean the infected region. This treatment is repeated for three days. The oil serves three different purposes, as it soothes skin, smothers the ear mites, and speeds the healing process.
  • Yellow Dock Root Extract: A convenient ear mites remedy to make at home may include Yellow Dock root extract, combine nine drops of the extract and diluted with one tablespoon of water. Fill half of a dropper with the mixture and place in the ears.  It is important to continue this treatment for many weeks (every other day) because ear mite eggs are rather resistant to home treatments, but once they hatch – a continuous treatment will prevent new hatchlings from reproducing until no more eggs exist.
